The Disconnected Leader = The Disengaged Employee
Finding Your Golden Thread to Reconnect the Disconnect
My talk, titled: 'Fuzzy Definitions: Why Most Digital Strategy Fails' - focused on one of the key challenges faced by organisations when implementing digital strategy / digital transformation programs. The challenge of employee disengagement. And one of the key drivers of employee disengagement, the disconnected leader.
I know from first hand experience that many a new initiative coming out of the boardroom can be met by some serious sceptical arms folded eyeball rolling when communicated to employees. Admit it. We've all been there and felt it - (even if you're a fellow radical optimist). Whether it's as part of the leadership team hearing yet another change to the implementation program that you have to communicate to your wider team, or indeed as an employee hearing all about the next great thing - there's a silent mantra of 'here we go again'.

It’s a sensation that’s not simply related to articulation or word mastery – it feels deeper. A feeling of there being something key embedded within you, but it’s stuck, you just can’t quite dislodge it to allow it to surface.

I, like many of you reading this article, have a busy mind and a busy life. I read a few books at any one time. I have a few projects on the go at any one time. I’m constantly spotting opportunities or having new ideas.

There’s no doubt about it, there’s a lot of noise. And within that noise, there’s just too much, of what I will refer to as, #fakesocial. If you’re like me, passionate about the far reaching and authentic connection opportunities social technologies can enable – no doubt you agree that it’s frustrating and more than just a little disheartening.
I’m calling out three #fakesocial culprits – and no doubt there are others. I invite you to vent in the comments.

Marketing is EVERYTHING! Agree? My view is right up there with the granddaddy of management and marketing, Peter Drucker, in totally agreeing with the following:
“The purpose of a business is to create a customer.” After all – what is a business without some form of user or customer? Errr. Dead.

Practice makes permanent.
